The win improves the Saxons to 11-5 overall and 4-3 in Empire 8 play while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 0-17 overall and 0-7 in conference play.
Junior forward Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) converted a key layup with 46 seconds left in the second half off an assist from senior forward Derek Lewis (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads (Corning CC)) to give the Saxons a 59-57 lead. After a missed three-pointer by Elmira, the Soaring Eagles sent senior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) to the line where he would convert one of two free throws, increasing the Saxons lead to three (60-57) with 24 seconds remaining. With six seconds left, Elmira would knock down a pair of free throws, to bring the Saxons lead to just one point before Curran would hit a clutch free throw to put AU ahead for good.
For the game, AU shot an impressive 48 percent from the floor and 40 percent from beyond the arc, while the Soaring Eagles finished shooting 41 percent from the floor and 43 percent from the three-point line.
AU employed a team effort as eight different Saxons would score a bucket, led by Lewis netting a team-high 12 points, while corralling five rebounds and dishing out a pair of assists. Parker had nine points, nine rebounds, four assists, one block, and a steal, and Curran, senior forward Pat Hollenbeck (Ontario, NY/Wayne), and freshman guard Tim Pacheco (Mount Pocono, PA/Pocono Mt. East) (five boards, and three assists) each netted eight points.
Three Soaring Eagles scored in double figures and were led by Josh Keys led all scorers with a game-high 20 points.
AU returns to action Friday, Jan. 27, at 8 p.m., when they take on visiting Nazareth.
