Saxons drop Conference match to Nazareth, 68-48
The Golden Flyers capitalized on 11 AU miscues, as they converted them into 15 points en route to a 68-48 victory in Empire 8 Conference play.
Alfred went into intermission trailing 32-25, as the Saxons were outshot 35 to 44 percent from the field, and 18 to 40 percent beyond the arc in the first half.
In the second half, AU (11-6, 4-4 Empire 8) improved on their shooting from the field (39 percent) as well as behind the arc (33 percent). The Saxons went on a scoring run seven minutes into the second half and cut the Nazareth lead down to three points, as a result of a tenacious defensive effort and hot scoring. AU would keep it within a 10-point game (52-43, with 8:18 remaining), before the Golden Flyers went on a 16-5 run over the course of the final eight minutes of the contest.
For the game, AU shot 37 percent from the field, 24 percent from beyond the arc, and 80 percent from the free throw line and Nazareth shot 51 percent (including 58 percent in the second half) from the floor and 39 percent from behind the arc.
Senior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) lead the Saxons in scoring with nine points, and pulling down four boards, while adding a steal. Sophomore forward Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) netted seven points, had two rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Senior Forward Derek Lewis (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads (Corning CC)) had a game-leading seven rebounds, scored five points, and dished out three assists, and 12 Saxons notched at least one basket.
Phil Scaffidi led the Golden Flyers with 15 points and four assists, while three other Nazareth (13-6, 6-2 Empire 8) players scored in double digits.
The Saxons return to action Saturday, Jan. 28th at 4 p.m. against St. John Fisher.
