Saxons sweep St. John Fisher in Empire 8 Conference play
Despite being plagued by foul trouble throughout the game, AU (12-6, 5-4 Empire 8) was able to conquer the Cardinals for the second time this season. Alfred held a distinct advantage from beyond the arc as they outshot Fisher 63 to 25
percent, and also shot 44 percent from the field compared to Fisher’s 38 percent in the first half as the built a 33-31 lead at intermission.
The Saxon came out in the second half strong in the second half and steadily continued to build their lead to as much as 13 points with seven minutes remaining in the game. The lead would not dip below seven points for the rest of the game. For the game, AU outshot Fisher from the field, 45 to 36 percent and held a staggering advantage from beyond the arc of 53 to 14 percent.
Sophomore forward Mike Branche (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) guided the Saxons by netting a game-high 21 points, including a perfect 3 for 3 from the three-point line, while corralling five rebounds. Senior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) added 16 points, four rebounds, four assists, and a steal, and junior forward Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) also broke double digits netting 11 points and three rebounds. Senior forward Pat Hollenbeck (Ontario, NY/Wayne) distributed the ball well that led to key baskets en route to dishing out a game-high six assist, while notching five points, and pulling down four rebounds.
St. John Fisher (10-10, 3-6 Empire 8) had ten different players score a bucket, and was led by Jason Norsen (13 rebounds) and Jordan Gettings (three steals) who scored 20 points and 15 points respectively.
AU will return to action Tuesday, Jan. 31st when they take on visiting Houghton at 7p.m. at the McLane Center.
