Ithaca sweeps visiting AU swimming and diving teams

ITHACA, NY - The Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams travelled to Ithaca College for their final dual meets of the season and were swept by the host Bombers. The AU men’s team lost, 192-106, while the Alfred women fell by a score of 238-56.

Junior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell) and freshman Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) were double winners for the Saxon men. Chapman won the 1,000-yard free (10:10.57) and 500-yard free (4:56.09) and Toth won the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.58) and 400-yard individual medley (4:20.27). Toth was also second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.00).

Other top swimmers for the Alfred men were: senior Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick Academy), first in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.03) and second in the 200 breast (2:20.61); junior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), second in the 200 fly (2:06.19) and 100 fly (53.90); sophomore Pete Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron), third in the 200 free (1:47.68) and 100 free (49.38); and freshman Dave Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville), third in the 100 back (56.49).

The team of senior Rich Guarniero (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor), Dolben, Irwin and Sowinski was second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:37.45).

Freshman Chrissy Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) was the Alfred women’s lone winner. She took the 50-yard freestyle (25.77) and was second in the 100-yard individual medley (1:05.75).

Other top performers for the Saxon women were: junior Shelby Remington (Pike, NY/Letchworth), third in the 1,000-yard free (11:48.43); and sophomore Heather Remchuk (Hornell, NY/Hornell), second in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.51) and 100 breast (1:14.31) and third in the 100-yard free (59.06 seconds)

The AU men’s and women’s teams are idle until the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association/Empire 8 Conference championships Feb. 23-25 in Webster, NY.
