Hartwick clips AU, 64-63

ONEONTA, NY -Host Hartwick College edged the Alfred University men’s basketball team, 64-63, Friday evening in an Empire 8 Conference matchup.

With the loss AU falls to 13-7 overall and 5-5 in Empire 8 play, while Hartwick improves to 19-2 overall and 8-2 in Empire 8 games.

In the first half of play, team each shot 37 percent from the floor, as AU went into intermission trailing the Hawks 29-23. The Saxons tied the game up at 31-31 with 16:56 remaining in the second half. AU would increase their lead to as many as five (37-32, with 15:52 remaining), before the Hawks began to chip away and eventually tie the game back up a 39-39, with 12:40 to go. The teams traded baskets throughout the games final eight minutes as no team led by more than five (Hartwick led 62-57 with 1:51 seconds remaining). For the game, AU shot 40 percent from the floor to the Hawks 39, and held a 40-39 advantage in rebounds.

Senior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) finished with a team-high 17 points and nine rebounds, game-high five assists, three steals, and a block to lead the Saxons. Senior forward Pat Hollenbeck (Ontario, NY/Wayne) registered a double-double netting 12 points, while pulling down a game-best 10 rebounds. Junior forward Brett Dennis (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) netted 14 points, freshman guard Tim Pacheco (Mt. Pocono, PA/Pocono Mt. East) chipped in with eight points, three rebounds and two assists.

Hartwick’s Jared Suderly led the Hawks scoring a game-high 22 points, while corralling eight rebounds. Anthony Keane chipped in with 16 points.

AU returns to action, Feb. 4, at 4 p.m., when they take on host Stevens in E8 action.
