Visiting Bombers top Saxons, 77-63
Ithaca and AU would trade baskets in the first half, as Ithaca held a five-point advantage (41-36) heading to intermission. For the half, the Bombers shot 47 percent from the field and 36 percent from behind the arc, compared to Saxons’ 39 percent from the field and 41 percent from behind the arc.
Alfred evened the score at 47-47, with five minutes into the second half. The Bombers responded going on a nine nothing to claim a 56-47 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the contest. The Saxons pulled within three points on two occasions (60-57, with 7:40 remaining and 62-59, 6:41), but would get no closer as Ithaca went on a 15-4 run over the final six plus minutes of action
For the game, AU (13-10, 5-8 Empire 8) shot 33 percent from the floor and 27 percent from beyond the arc, while Ithaca (11-13, 8-5 Empire 8) finished shooting 48 percent from the floor and 31 percent. from behind the arc.
Senior forward Derek Lewis (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads (Corning CC)) scored a team-best 15 points, and added eight rebounds and two assists to lead the Saxons. Senior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) recorded a double-double netting 13 points and corralling a team-best 10 rebounds. Junior forward Brett Dennis (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) chipped in with seven points, five rebounds, and an assist.
Tom Sweeney led the Bombers netting a game-high 19 points, while adding four boards, and a block. Connor Rogers finished with 15 points, on six-of-eight shooting (three-of-four from behind the arc). Sean Rossi and Frank Mitchell each chipped in with 11 points.
The Saxons return to action Feb. 14, at 7p.m. as they travel to Keuka College for a non-conference matchup.
