AU swimming and diving teams complete first day’s action at UNYSCSA/E8 meet
WEBSTER, NY - The Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were in seventh and 12th place, respectively, after the first day of the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association/Empire 8 Conference championships.
The UNYSCSA/Empire 8 championships run Wednesday through Saturday at the Webster Aquatic Center. After five events, the AU men are in seventh place with 116 points and the Alfred women are in 12th place with 65 points after four events. Ithaca is in first place in the men’s meet and Stevens leads the women’s standings.
Sophomore Pete Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) led the AU men Wednesday, placing ninth in the 50-yard freestyle (21.39 seconds).
Other AU men scoring in individual events (top 24) were: senior Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick Academy), 14th in the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.75); junior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell), 15th in the 500-yard freestyle (4:47.08); freshmen David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port) and David Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville), 17th (21.56) and 21st (22.11), respectively, in the 50-yard free; and sophomore Zach Kranefeld (Millville, NJ/Millville), 19th in 3-meter diving (292.45 points).
The team of senior Rich Guarniero (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor), Dolben, junior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) and Sowinski was sixth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:35.47), while Coombes, freshman Jeff Rowland (Rochester, NY/Hilton), Chapman and Luke were 23rd (1:39.43).
Freshman Christina Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) was the only AU women’s swimmer to score in individual events Wednesday. She took 10th in the 50-yard freestyle (24.65).
Other top performers in individual events for the Saxon women were: junior Shelby Remington (Pike, NY/Letchworth) and senior Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo), 27th (5:29.36) and 37th (5:35.18), respectively, in the 500-yard free; juniors Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) and Katie Ganley (Syracuse, NY/Westhill), 26th (2:18.15) and 43rd (2:24.09), respectively, in the 200-yard individual medley; and sophomore Heather Remchuk (Hornell, NY/Hornell), 33rd in the 50-yard freestyle (26.00 seconds).
The team of Hoops, Remchuk, Matich and Behr took sixth in the 200-yard medley relay. Their time of 1:50.48 set a new school record.
The championships continue today with preliminary round action this morning and finals this evening in the men’s and women’s 200 free relay; men’s and women’s 400-yard IM; men’s and women’s 100-yard butterfly; men’s and women’s 200-yard freestyle; women’s 1-meter diving; and men’s and women’s 400-yard medley relay.
