Alumna to present next Bergren Forum on gravity and space

The Alfred University Bergren Forum presents "How Not to Fall Down a Black Hole," a talk by Rachel (Lash) Maitra, AU class of 2001, at 12:10 p.m. in Nevins Theater, Powell Campus Center, Thursday, March 1. The program is open to the public free of charge.

Maitra, visiting assistant professor of physics at Albion College, Albion, Mich., will focus on the relationship between gravity and space-time and argue the question; Can microscopic space-time foam save us when gravity gets too extreme?

The daughter of Martha and David Lash of Alfred, Maitra earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from AU. She earned a master’s degree in philosophy and a Ph.D. in mathematics, both from Yale University. Prior to teaching at Albion College she was a visiting researcher at the both Michigan and Amsterdam universities.

The Bergren Forum, sponsored by the Alfred Division of Human studies and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, meets Thursdays during each academic semester at the University. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch: coffee and tea will be available.
