AU English equestrian team ties for third at Cornell
ITHACA, NY - The Alfred University English equestrian team tied for third place at a show Sunday, Feb. 19, hosted by Cornell University.
Twelve teams competed in the shows, with Cornell winning, Binghamton finishing second and AU tying Ithaca in third place. Three AU riders qualified for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 2, Region 1 championships March 17 in Ithaca.
Freshman Olivia Costich (Penfield, NY/Harley School), senior Katie LeSuer (Edinboro, PA/Cambridge Springs) and senior Kalcy O’Keefe (Rochester, NY/Penfield) each qualified for regionals. Costich (third place) qualified in open equitation over fences; LeSuer (second) qualifed in intermediate equitation on the flat; and O’Keefe (fifth) qualified in open equitation over fences.
Junior Tesla Parker (Waitsfield, VT/Harwood Union) and sophomore Nicole Mekker (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) each earned first place blue ribbons. Parker won intermediate equitation on the flat and Mekker won walk-trot.
Other top riders for AU Sunday were: junior Eileen Cody (Hamburg, NY/Nardin Academy), third in advanced walk-trot canter; sophomore Amelia Maslen (Chardon, OH/Andrews Osborne), second in novice equitation over fences; senior Ronja Ogrodnik (Spencer, NY/Spencer-Van Etten), second in novice equitation on the flat; O’Keefe, third in open equitation on the flat; senior Jessica Rapanes (Huntington Station, NY/Half Hollow Hills), third in novice equitation on the flat; senior Danielle Ross (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s), second in intermediate equitation on the flat; freshman Avery Sandler, third in novice equitation on the flat; and junior Sara Schron (Whitehall, OH) and sophomore Kaylyn Slater (Phelps, NY/Midlakes), second and third, respectively, in advanced walk-trot-canter.
The AU English team is in action next on Saturday, Feb. 25, at home.
