AU records continue to fall at UNYSCSA/Empire 8 championships

WEBSTER, NY - The Alfred University women’s swimming and diving teams established two more new school records Thursday during the second day’s action at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association/Empire 8 Conference men’s and women’s swimming and diving championships.

The UNYSCSA/Empire 8 championships run Wednesday through Saturday at the Webster Aquatic Center. After 10 events, the AU men are in sixth place with 305 points and the Alfred women are in 12th place with 144 points after 10 events. Ithaca is in first place in both the men’s and women’s team standings.

The AU women set two new school marks on Thursday. Senior Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo), sophomore Heather Remchuk (Hornell, NY/Hornell), junior Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) and freshman Christina Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) set a new record in the 400-yard medley relay with their eighth-place time of 4:04.88, breaking the previous school record set in 2003. The same foursome set a new school record in the 200-yard medley relay on Wednesday.

Also on Thursday, Matich set a new school record in the 400-yard individual medley. Her time of 4:55.52 in the morning’s preliminary round broke the previous record set in 2005 by Lyndsay Scypta. Matich would go on to finish 24th in the event Thursday evening with a time of 4:59.87.

Other top swimmers for the Alfred women Thursday were Behr, 19th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.38) and junior Shelby Remington (Pike, NY/Letchworth), 32md in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.90). The team of Matich, junior Tracy Miller (Auburn, NY/Auburn), freshman Sarah Dykstra (Bellingham, WA/Sehome) and Remington took 13th in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:47.84).

Freshman Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) narrowly missed breaking the school record in the 400-yard IM on Thursday. His time of 4:10.67 was good for second place and was just .36 seconds off the school mark of 4:10.31 set in 2006 by Page Beecher.

Other top swimmers for the Saxon men Thursday were: senior Jeff Swartout (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley), 24th in the 400-yard IM (4:33.93); sophomore Pete Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron), junior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell) and senior Rich Guarniero (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor), 14th (1:46.01), 15th (1:46.28) and 22nd (1:47.22), respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle; and junior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), 11th in the 100-yard butterfly (52.03 seconds).

The team of freshman David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port), Toth, freshman David Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville) and Sowinski was fourth in the 200 free relay (1:25.06), while Guarniero, Irwin, and seniors Rich Lenihan (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) and Warren Dolben (Rye , NH/Berwick Academy) were 20th in 1:27.58. The team of Guarniero, Dolben, Irwin and Luke took sixth in the 400-yard medley relay (3:32.49). Coombes, freshman Jeff Rowland (Rochester, NY/Hilton), Toth and Chapman were 22nd (3:39.30).

The championships continue today with preliminary round action this morning and finals this evening in the men’s and women’s 200-yard butterfly; men’s and women’s 100-yard backstroke; men’s and women’s 100-yard breaststroke; men’s 1-meter diving; and men’s and women’s 800-yard freestyle relay.
