AU men finish in seventh, women 12th at UNYSCSA/Empire 8 championships

WEBSTER, NY - The Alfred University men’s team finished in seventh place and the AU women in 12th at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association/Empire 8 Conference men’s and women’s swimming and diving championships.

The four-day championships, which concluded Saturday evening, were held at the Webster Aquatic Center. The Alfred men accumulated 553 points and the Saxon women scored 291 points. Ithaca College won both the men’s and women’s titles.

On Saturday, the AU men’s performance was highlighted by the team of freshman Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), junior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell), freshman David Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville) and sophomore Pete Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) taking fourth in the meet’s final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:09.16).

Toth placed 10th in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.58). Four AU swimmers scored in the 100-yard freestyle: Sowinski was 14th (47.83 seconds); Coombes was 16th (48.42); freshman David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port) was 20th (48.21); and senior Rich Guarniero (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) was 23rd (49.16). Three scored in the 1,650-yard freestyle, as Chapman took 15th (17:13.48), freshman Jeff Rowland (Rochester, NY/Hilton) was 17th (17:27.75), and junior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) was 21st (17:39.26). Senior Jeff Swartout (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) took 22nd in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.87).

The team of Luke, Irwin, Rowland and senior Rich Lenihan (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) placed 22nd in the 400 free relay (3:15.43).

Freshman Christina Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) and sophomore Heather Remchuk (Hornell, NY/Hornell) led the AU women on Saturday. Behr took 10th in the 100-yard free, setting a new school record with her time of 53.90, and Remchuk was 13th in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.50). Freshman Sarah Dykstra (Bellingham, WA/Sehome) was 23rd in the 200-yard backstroke (2:18.26) and junior Shelby Remington (Pike, NY/Letchworth) was 20th in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:58.99).

The team of senior Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo), Remchuk, Remington and Behr placed 12th in the 400-yasrd freestyle relay (3:48.24).

Senior Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick Academy) was the only meet champion for Alfred. He won the 100-yard breaststroke Friday with a time of 57.33 seconds, which met NCAA "B" cut provisional qualifying standards. He’ll now wait to see if his provisional time is fast enough to get him into next month’s NCAA Division III championship meet.
