AU men’s tennis team opens spring season with three wins

OLEAN, NY - The Alfred University men’s tennis team opened its spring 2012 season with three victories over the weekend.

The Saxons defeated host D’Youville, 8-1 on Friday. In a pair of matches Saturday on St. Bonaventure University’s indoor courts, AU beat Penn State-Behrend, 6-3, and Pitt-Bradford, 9-0. Alfred’s record now stands at 4-1 overall. The Saxons split a pair of matches in September- beating Oswego and falling to Oneonta - which count toward this season’s record.

In Friday’s match at D’Youville, the Saxons won five of six singles matches and swept three doubles matches. Earning singles wins for AU were: senior Nathan Garletts (Havertown, PA/Haverford), 6-3, 6-0 in second singles; senior Nate Kucko (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks), 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in third singles; sophomore Peter Benoit (Gasport, NY/Barker), 6-1, 6-1 in fourth singles; freshman Michael Graham (Elmira, NY/Southside), 6-4, 6-1 in fifth singles; and senior Kyle McDevitt (Underhill, VT/Mt. Mansfield), 6-0, 6-0 in sixth singles.
Senior Nick Schneider (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Garletts won first doubles, 804; Kucko and Graham took second doubles, 8-0; and Benoit and McDevitt claimed third doubles, 8-4.

Against Penn State-Behrend, Garletts won in second singles, 6-2, 6-1; junior Stefan Nonnenmann (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) claimed fourth singles, 6-1, 6-3; Benoit won in fifth singles, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3; and Graham won his sixth singles match, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7). Kucko and Graham won second doubles, 8-6, while Garletts and Benoit were victorious in third doubles, 8-0.

In the shutout of Pitt-Bradford, Schneider won first singles, 6-0, 6-1; Garletts took second singles, 6-2, 6-1; Kucko won third singles, 6-0, 6-3; Nonnenmann won fourth singles, 6-0, 6-0; Benoit won fifth singles, 6-3, 6-1; and Graham won sixth singles, 8-4. Schneider and Nonnenmann won first doubles, 8-2; Kucko and Graham won second doubles, 8-4; and Garletts and Benoit took third doubles, 8-0.

The Saxons now prepare to embark on their Spring Trip to Orlando, FL, where they will play five matches. AU plays Berry College on March 4 at 5 p.m.; Cornerstone College on March 5 at 9 a.m.; Coe College on March 6 at 9 a.m.; Kings College on March 6 at 4 p.m.; and Marywood on March 9 at 9 a.m.
