Duo from Yale to open summer carillon series at AU
7/02/01

Two visiting musicians will perform at the first recital in Alfred University’s 2001 Wingate Memorial Summer Carillon Series at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 10. All recitals are free and open to the public.

Performing sometimes solo and sometimes together will be Ellen Espenschied and Roy Lee, who are united by their connection with Yale University in New Haven, CT.

Espenschied holds a Master of Music degree in organ from the Yale School of Music and Institute of Sacred Music. She is director of the Yale Freshman Chorus, and teaches choral conducting at the University of Bridgeport and music appreciation at a New Haven high school. She is also director of music and organist at Tabor Lutheran Church in Branford, CT.

Roy Lee graduated from Yale College in May 2001 with a BA in history. He began playing the carillon as a freshman and was co-chair of the Yale University Guild of Carillonneurs the past two years. In June 2000, he became a Carillonneur member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America by playing a successful advancement recital at the annual congress in Mercersburg, PA. A native of Vancouver, BC, he will return to Canada in the fall to begin law school at the University of Toronto.

Tuesday’s program includes a variety of Scottish, English, Irish, and American tunes as well as Spanish, French, and Dutch classical pieces composed or arranged for carillon.

The sound of the carillon is best enjoyed on the lawns, where picnicking is encouraged, or on Upper College Drive. The only view from the ground of the carillonneur in action is found on the lawn in front of the apartments behind Howell Hall. Visitors may also climb the 69 steps to the top to watch the guest artist in action, but are cautioned to be quiet.

The recital series will continue at 7 p.m. July 17 (George Matthew, Jr., of Vermont is the visiting recitalist); July 24 (Julianne Vanden Wyngaard of Michigan), and July 31 (Linda Dzuris of South Carolina.)
