AU softball team drops first two on Arizona Spring Break trip

TUSCON, AZ - The Alfred University softball team Monday dropped the first two contests of its 12-game Spring Break trip to Tuscon, AZ. Loras College edged the Saxons, 5-4, then ninth-ranked Coe College defeated AU, 4-1.

In Monday morning’s game against Loras, senior shortstop Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) paced the Saxons, going 2-for-4 with a homerun, two RBIs and a run scored. Freshman rightfielder Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) had two hits, two stolen bases and a run scored; sophomore centerfielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) had an RBI triple and scored once; freshman Betsy Clark (Webster, NY/Bishop Kearney) drove in a run; and sophomore infielder Melissa Montano (West Covina, CA/Walnut) had a hit and scored a run.

Freshman pitcher Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) started for AU, going 4 1/3 innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out five and walking four. Clark relieved and tossed two-hit ball over 1 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out a pair.

In the game against Coe Monday afternoon, Hampton went 3-for-3 with a stolen base; Hedrick went 2-for-4; and Delgado went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore third baseman Jessica Warner (Runnemede, NJ/Triton), sophomore infielder Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago), Montano and Wickwire each had a base hit, while sophomore pinch runner Danielle Mastropierro (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) scored the Saxons’ lone run.

Freshman pitcher Jessica O’Sullivan (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable Regional) took the complete-game loss for AU, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits over six innings, striking out five and walking four.

AU plays Coe again this morning at 9 a.m. and takes on Pitt-Bradford at 1:30 p.m. The rest of the Saxons’ Arizona schedule is as follows: Medaille at 6 p.m. and Pitt-Bradford at 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 7; Purdue North Central at 12 p.m. and Northwestern College at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 8; Siena Heights at 2 p.m. and No. 7 Central College at 4 p.m., Friday, March 9; and Patton College at 3:30 p.m. and Central at 6 p.m., Saturday, March 10.
