AU men’s tennis team splits first two matches in Florida

ORLANDO, FL - The Alfred University men’s tennis team has split the first two matches of its five-match Spring Break trip to Florida. The Saxons opened play in Orlando with a 5-4 loss to Berry College on Sunday, then rebounded Monday to edge Cornerstone, 5-4.

In the win over Cornerstone, AU (5-2) got singles wins from senior Nick Schneider (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), 7-5, 6-1 in first singles; senior Nathan Garletts (Havertown, PA/Haverford), 6-0, 6-2 in second singles; and junior Stefan Nonnenmann (New Providence, NJ/New Providence), 6-1, 6-0 in fourth singles.

Schneider and Nonnenmann won first doubles, 8-4, while Garletts and sophomore Peter Benoit (Gasport, NY/Barker) took third doubles, 8-0.

Earning singles wins for the Saxons in the loss to Berry were senior Nate Kucko (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks), 6-1, 6-4 in third singles and Benoit, 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 in fifth singles. Schneider and Nonnenmann won first doubles, 8-6, and Garletts teamed with Benoit to take third doubles, 8-3.

AU returns to action with two matches today - at 9 a.m. against Coe College and 4 p.m. against Kings College - before wrapping up its Florida trip against Marywood at 9 a.m. Friday, March 9.
