Saxon men’s tennis team beats Kings, falls to Coe

ORLANDO, FL - The Alfred University men’s tennis team went 1-1 in a pair of matches played Wednesday on its Spring Break trip to Orlando, FL. The Saxons lost a 7-2 decision to Coe College in the morning, then rebounded in the afternoon to whip Kings College, 8-1.

Against Kings, Alfred (6-3) earned wins in five of six singles matches. Senior Nick Schneider (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) won first singles, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6); senior Nathan Garletts (Havertown, PA/Haverford) won second singles, 6-0, 6-2; junior Stefan Nonnenmann (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) won fourth singles, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-8); sophomore Peter Benoit (Gasport, NY/Barker) won fifth singles, 6-2, 6-4; and freshman Michael Graham (Elmira, NY/Southside), won sixth singles, 6-2, 6-2.

AU swept doubles play against Kings. Schneider and Nonnenman won first doubles, 8-6; senior Nate Kucko (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) and Graham won second doubles, 8-4; and Garletts and Benoit won third doubles, 8-1.

Alfred did not win any of the six singles matches against Coe earlier in the day, but took two of the three doubles contests. Schneider and Nonnenmann won first doubles, 8-3, while Garletts and Benoit took third doubles, 9-8 (7-3).

AU opened its five-match Spring Break trip with a loss to Berry College on Sunday and a win over Cornerstone College on Monday. The Saxons wrap up the Florida trip with a 9 a.m. match against Marywood University on Friday, March 9.
