AU evens record with two wins in Arizona

TUSCON, AZ - Senior shortstop Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) hit a pair of three-run homeruns and tied a school record for hits in a game as the Alfred University softball team routed Medaille College, 22-3, in Arizona. The Saxons then defeated Pitt-Bradford, 14-8, to even their record at 3-3 on the team’s season-opening 12-game Spring Break trip.

Against Medaille, Hedrick’s five hits in five at-bats tied the school single-game record set by Jessica Snyder against Hilbert in 1999. She also scored four runs and drove in seven in a game that was stopped after five innings.

The Saxons banged out 24 hits against Medaille. Freshman outfielder Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base; sophomore outfielder Danielle Mastropierro (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) had two hits, including a double, and scored a run; senior leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) went 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs; and junior second baseman Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood) and sophomore outfielder Rachel Guszick (Sparrowbush, NY/Port Jervis) each had three hits and scored three times, with Mistretta also driving in three and stealing two bases.

Freshman pitcher Ashley Sabourin (Brewerton, NY/Paul V. Moore) got the win for AU, allowing three earned runs on seven hits over five innings, striking out three with one walk.

The AU bats remained hot against Pitt-Bradford, as the Saxons had 17 hits. Hampton went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, a run and a stolen base (her seventh in six games) and Netta was 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and an RBI. Hedrick went 2-for-2 with a triple and scored a run; sophomore centerfielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) had two hits and two RBIs; junior catcher Hana Gross (Union, NJ/Union) belted a three-run homer and scored twice; sophomore infielder Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored; and Mistretta drove in a run with a base hit and scored twice.

Freshman Jessica O’Sullivan (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable Regional) got the win in relief of freshman starter Betsy Clark (Webster, NY/Bishop Kearney), allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings. Clark allowed four earned runs on five hits over the opening 2 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking five.

Alfred plays today against Purdue North Central at 12 p.m. and Northwestern College at 2 p.m. The rest of AU’s Arizona schedule is as follows: Siena Heights at 2 p.m. and No. 7 Central College at 4 p.m., Friday, March 9; and Patton College at 3:30 p.m. and Central at 6 p.m., Saturday, March 10.
