Saxons split two on Spring Break trip

TUSCON, AZ - The Alfred University softball team played two games during their Spring Break trip to Arizona Thursday, winning the first, 6-5, against Purdue North Central, then falling, 4-0, to Northwestern College.

In the win over Purdue North Central, senior shortstop Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) continued her torrid hitting, going 2-for-4 with a double, triple, RBI and two runs scored. A day earlier, she went 7-for-7 in two AU wins, with two three-run homers, five runs scored and seven RBIs.

Hedrick also added a stolen base in Thursday’s win over Purdue North Central. Other top hitters for the Saxons included: freshman outfielder Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard), two hits, one RBI, a run scored an a stolen base (her eighth of the season); freshman first baseman Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda), 2-for-3 with an RBI double; junior second baseman Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood) (RBI) and sophomore infielder Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) (stolen base, run scored), each with a base hit and sacrifice; sophomore outfielder Rachel Guszick (Sparrowbush, NY/Port Jervis) and senior leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional), each with a run-scoring hit; and sophomore third baseman Jessica Warner (Runnemede, NJ/Triton), with two hits in three at-bats.

Freshman pitcher Samantha Jo Muller (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) earned the complete-game win for the Saxons, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits over seven innings and striking out one.

Netta went 2-for-3 against Northwestern College, while Hedrick, Hampton and Mistretta each had one hit in three at-bats.

Sophomore pitcher Victoria Kramp (Yardley,PA/Pennsbury) took the loss for AU, allowing four second-inning runs (three earned) on three hits while striking out three and walking one over 1 2/3 innings. Freshman Jessica O’Sullivan (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable Regional) pitched 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing only two hits while striking out six.

Alfred (4-4) plays today against Siena Heights at 2 p.m. and No. 7 Central College at 4 p.m. The Saxons wrap up their 12-game Arizona trip Saturday against Patton College at 3:30 p.m. and Central at 6 p.m.
