Saxons O’Keefe earns award as region’s top Western rider

ALFRED, NY - Kalcy O’Keefe (Rochester, NY/Penfield) a member on the Alfred University equestrian team, has been named the top Western rider in the region.

O’Keefe, a senior at Alfred, has been named the High Point AQHA (American Quarter Horse Association) rider for Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone II, Region I. She was honored for earning the most points in the region in the Open level of competition throughout regular season shows.

By earning the high-point rider title, O’Keefe gains automatic entry into the IHSA national championships May 3-6 in Raleigh, NC. She will also participate in the team competition at the IHSA Zone championships and National Semi-Finals.

O’Keefe becomes the second AU rider in as many years to earn High Point regional honors from the AQHA. Allison Lawrence took those honors last season and went on to compete at nationals.
Also last year, Barbara Koziol, won the Cacchione Cup as high point rider in hunt seat competition in Zone II, Region I, and competed in the IHSA nationals. Lawrence and Koziol were first riders in AU program history to win high point regional honors.

O’Keefe placed seventh in the Cacchione Cup standings this year and is set to compete in the IHSA Zone II, Region I championships in open equitation over fences on Saturday, March 17, in Ithaca. She is coached by Harry Hurd, head Western coach, and Nancy Kohler, head hunt seat coach and director of the AU Equestrian Program.
