AU women’s lacrosse team rolls past SUNY Canton, 25-6, in season opener
CANTON, NY-The Alfred University women’s lacrosse team breezed past host SUNY Canton 25-6, Saturday afternoon, to open the 2012 season.
The Saxons held a commanding 14-4 advantage heading into intermission as they outshot the hosts 24-9. In the second half AU continued their first half momentum outscoring the Roos’ 11-2, and holding a 19-5 advantage in shots, while committing zero turnovers.
For the game, AU held a 43-14 advantage in shots, picked up 16 groundballs to Canton’s six, and forced 14 turnovers while committing just five miscues.
Junior midfielder Ali Garcia (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial) recorded a game-high and career-high nine points on six goals and three assists to pace the Saxons (1-0). Junior midfielder Devin Fitzgerald (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) and sophomore midfielder Ashley White (Islip, NY/Islip) netted five and four goals respectively, while dishing out one assist and freshman attack Kaitlyn Button (Canastota, NY/Cazenovia) had three goals and three assists. Freshman attack Maria Bentley (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse) and sophomore defender Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) each netted two goals and helped on another and junior midfielder Tracie McGinnity (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) two goals. Senior attack Emily Crosby (Fairport, NY/Fairport) chipped in with a goal and an assist.
Freshman Taylor Tarajos (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) recorded four saves in goal for AU. Holli-Jo Cota started in goal for the Roos’ stopping a game-high eight shots in 30 minutes of action and Laura Pratt played the second half in goal making seven saves.
Brittani Bessette and Tressa Golden each scored two goals and dished out an assist to lead SUNY Canton (0-1).
AU returns to action Wednesday, March 14, at 4 p.m., when they take on visiting Roberts Wesleyan.
