Softball team finishes Spring Break trip to Arizona
TUSCON, AZ - The Alfred University softball team went 1-3 Friday and Saturday to finish its 12-game season-opening Spring Break trip to Arizona with a 5-7 record.
The Saxons lost two games Friday. AU saw Siena Heights come back from a 9-2 deficit and score a 13-11 win with a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the seventh, then the Saxons lost 9-1 to seventh-ranked Central (IA) College. On Saturday, AU defeated NAIA Patton College, 4-1, before losing by an identical score to Central.
Against Siena Heights on Friday, senior shortstop Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) went 4-for-5 with a homerun, three RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Freshman rightfielder Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) and sophomore centerfielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) each went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI; senior leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs; junior catcher Hana Gross (Union, NJ/Union) had two hits, including a homerun, and drove in three; and sophomore infielder Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) went 3-for-4 and scored twice.
Freshman pitcher Jessica O'Sullivan (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable Regional) look the loss in relief, allowing four earned runs on four hits in one inning of work.
Netta (double, RBI) and Arguello each went 2-for-2 in the five-inning loss to Central on Friday. Hedrick was 1-for-3 with a run scored and sophomore third baseman Jessica Warner (Runnemede, NJ/Triton) had a hit in two at-bats. Freshman pitcher Betsy Clark (Webster, NY/Bishop Kearney) started and took the loss, allowing four earned runs on three hits in 1/3 innings. Freshman Ashley Sabourin (Brewerton, NY/Paul V. Moore) relieved and allowed five earned runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings.
In the win over Patton Saturday, O’Sullivan earned the complete-game victory, allowing one earned run on five hits in seven innings and striking out 10.
Delgado went 1-for-3 with solo homerun and Arguello (RBI) and Hampton each went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Warner and Netta each had a hit and Hedrick had an RBI double and scored a run.
In Saturday’s loss to Central, Netta went 2-for-3 with a solo homerun; freshman Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) and Hedrick each went 1-for-3 with a double; and sophomore infielder Melissa Montano (West Covina, CA/Walnut) went 1-for-3. Sophomore pitcher Victoria Kramp (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) took the complete-game loss for the Saxons, allowing four earned runs on five hits over six innings, striking out five and walking eight.
AU is in action next on March 20 for a 3 p.m. doubleheader against visiting Pitt-Bradford, at Hornell High School.
