AU English equestrian team wins final regular-season show
ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University English equestrian team hosted its final regular-season show of the year Feb. 25 and took first place out of 12 teams competing.
Freshman Casey Duncan (Stuarts Draft, VA/Stuarts Draft) won two events - novice equitation on the flat and novice equitation over fences - and was named reserve high point rider, and three other Saxons qualified for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone II, Region I championships in Ithaca on March 17.
Sophomore Amelia Maslen (Chardon, OH/Andrews Osborne Academy) placed first in novice equitation over fences and qualified for regionals in that event, while also taking second in intermediate equitation on the flat. Junior Tesla Parker (Waitsfield, VT/Harwood Union) took first in intermediate equitation on the flat and qualified for regionals, as did freshman Avery Sandler (Israel/Atidim Hamich Lamin) with his fourth-place finish in novice equitation on the flat.
In addition to Duncan, Maslen and Parker, other AU riders earning first-place blue ribbons were: sophomore Annie Bailey (Waynesburg, PA/Waynesburg) in advanced walk-trot-canter; senior Katie LeSuer (Edinboro, PA/Cambridge Springs) in intermediate equitation over fences; sophomore Nicole Mekker (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) in walk-trot; and senior Ronja Ogrodnik (Spencer, NY/Spencer-Van Etten) in novice equitation on the flat.
Eleven riders will compete at the IHSA regional championships March 17 in Ithaca. The top two in each event will move on to the IHSA Zone II championships April 7 at Skidmore College.
