Saxons fall to Keuka, 10-8

KEUKA PARK, NY - Despite scoring the first two goals of the contest the Alfred University men’s lacrosse team fell to host Keuka College 10-8, Wednesday evening in a non-conference matchup.

AU held a slim 7-6 advantage heading into intermission, as they posted 10 shots in each quarter, while holding a eight shot advantage (20-12) after two quarters of play.

In the second half Keuka turned up the intensity as the held AU scoreless in the third quarter, while notching three goals to claim a 9-7 lead. Keuka tacked on another score in the fourth quarter before sophomore attackman Caleb McCaig (Corning, NY/Corning West (Mercyhurst)) ended the Saxons scoring drought converting of a pass from freshman attackman Riley Kinnane (Little Compton, RI/Portsmouth Abbey). McCaig’s scored proved to be the last of the contest, as the Saxons fell 10-8 to hosts Keuka College.

McCaig finished with a team-high four points on two goals and two assists and sophomore attackman Brett Carroll (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) netted a pair of goals to pace the Saxons. Senior midfielder Brendan Murphy (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) (four groundballs), junior midfielders Dave Malave (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River), Matt Zon (Buffalo, NY/Sweet Home) (six-of-17 at the face-off X, two groundballs) and sophomore midfielder Derek Green (Pittsburgh, PA/The Kiski School) each scored a goal. Senior midfielders Jay Whyel (Markleysburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy), and Justin Shultis (Kingston, NY/Kingston (SUNY Delhi CC)) each chipped in with an assist. Junior defender Jake Spadoni (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder) scooped up two groundballs, while causing a game-high three turnovers.

Freshman Cody O’Connor (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) stopped a game-high nine shots, while Eric Saltrelli (win) and Scott Thielman each played 30 minutes in net for the Storm, making six and one save respectively.

Gino Marcello registered seven points on four goals and three assists and Chris Redington scored three goals to lead Keuka (2-2).

AU (1-5, 0-0 Empire 8) plays next on March 24 against Hilbert at Merrill Field.
