Saxons sweep twinbill from host Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Alfred University softball teams took both games of a non-league doubleheader from host Penn College Friday afternoon. AU won the first game 10-0 in six innings, then posted a five-inning, 27-0 shutout in the nightcap to improve to 9-7 on the season.

Freshman pitcher Samantha Jo Muller (Port Jervis) threw an abbreviated no-hitter in the second game, striking out one and walking one in five innings. She helped herself at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a homerun, a double, three runs scored and five RBIs.

In the opener freshman first baseman Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) went 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and an RBI for AU, while senior leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) had three hits in five at-bats, scored twice and stole a base. Freshman pitcher Jessica O’Sullivan (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable Regional) got the complete-game shutout, allowing two hits and striking out eight.

Sophomore Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) had a hit, scored one run and drove in another and junior second baseman Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood) went 2-for-4 with a run batted in.

AU scored 13 third-inning runs and plated eight more in the fourth in the second game. Penn College made 10 errors, which helped lead to 14 unearned runs.

Sophomore third baseman Jessica Warner (Runnemede, NJ/Triton) went4-for-6 with three runs and four RBIs; sophomore rightfielder Rachel Guszick (Sparrowbush, NY/Port Jervis) went 2-for-3 with a double, four runs, and three RBIs; Mistretta was 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs; freshman centerfielder Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) scored three runs and drove in three; freshman catcher Lauren Fix (Hudson, NY/Germantown) had two hits, drove in two and scored three times; Arguello went 3-for-6 with a run and two RBIs; and Netta added three RBIs.

AU is in action next on Saturday, March 31, when the Saxons open Empire 8 play with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Hornell High School against visiting Nazareth.
