AU men’s lacrosse team dominates Hilbert, 22-3
AU held a commanding 9-3 lead heading into intermission as they outshout the visitors 26-10, and won 10-of-24 draws at the face-off X.
The Saxons’ dominance carried over into the second half, holding the Hawks scoreless, while tallying 13 goals. For the game, AU outshot Hilbert 55-24, picked up 49 groundballs to the Hawks 24, and finished an impressive 22-of-27 on face-offs.
Freshman attackman Nicolas Wood (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) (two goals, three assist) and sophomore midfielder Brendan Sullivan (Stafford, VA/North Stafford/The Kiski School) (four goals, one assist) each tallied five points to pace the Saxons. Sophomore attackman Brett Carroll (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) scored four goals and junior midfielder Dave Malave (Wading River, NY/Shorham Wading River) dished out a game-best four assists. Sophomore attackman Caleb McCaig (Corning, NY/Corning West (Mercyhurst)) scored one goal and had a pair of assists and senior attackman Stefan Dabkowski (Latham, NY/Shaker (SUNY Delhi CC)) (one assist), senior midfielder Justin Shultis (Kingston, NY/Kingston (SUNY Delhi CC)), and freshman attackman Riley Kinnane (Little Compton, PA/Portsmouth Abbey) each scored two goals. Junior midfielder Matt Zon (Buffalo, NY/Sweet Home) (one goal) finished a staggering 14-of-18 on face-offs and scooped up a game-best nine groundballs.
Junior defender Eric Jelen (Nanuet, NY/Clarkstown South) picked up five groundballs and caused a game-high four turnovers to lead AU on defense. Junior defender Jake Spadoni (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) caused three turnovers and scooped up five groundballs and senior defensive midfielder Brendan Murphy (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) (one goal) picked up five groundballs and caused one turnover.
Freshman Cody O’Connor (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) stopped six shots in 48:20 minutes of action to earn the victory for AU. Sophomore Tyler Beyor (Carthage, NY/Carthage (Regis College) made three saves in 7:43 of work and junior Theo Tomczak (Elba, NY/Elba) played 3:57 in goal and made one save. Wagner Williams went the distance in net for the Hawks’ and made a game-high 12 saves.
Sean Purtill, Doug Takac, and Nick Kieffer each tallied a goal for Hilbert, while John Pingitore dished out a pair of assists for Hilbert (1-3).
AU (2-5, 0-0 Empire 8) plays next on March 27 against host Medaille College, at 4 p.m..
