AU softball team sweeps Nazareth to open Empire 8 Conference play

HORNELL, NY - The Alfred University softball team opened Empire 8 Conference play Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Nazareth College. The Saxons rallied to beat the Golden Flyers, 9-6, in the opener, then took the second game, 3-1.

In the opener, Nazareth (2-12, 0-2 Empire 8) plated five runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-3 lead. The Golden Flyers opened the inning with four straight singles to score a pair. With the bases loaded and two out Nazareth scored three more runs on two straight singles before AU freshman pitcher Samantha Jo Muller (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) got a groundout to end the inning.

The Saxons (11-7, 2-0 Empire 8) responded in the bottom of the frame with six runs to take a 9-6 lead, with first seven AU batters reaching base. Senior shortstop Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) belted a two-run double and later scored, and senior leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) smacked a two-run homerun, her second round-tripper of the game.

Muller set the Golden Flyers down in order in the top of the seventh to earn the win. Freshman Jessica O’Sullivan (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable Regional) started for AU and allowed six earned runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings, striking out one. Muller went 1 1/3 scoreless innings and allowed one hit while striking out two to improve to 3-0 on the year.

Netta went 2-for-4 with two homeruns, three RBIs and two runs; sophomore Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) went 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and two RBIs; sophomore third baseman Jessica Warner (Runnemede, NJ/Triton) went 2-for-2 and scored once; and junior second baseman Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood) had two hits and scored twice.

Leftfielder Shauna Bardanis was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to lead Nazareth. Second baseman Kailey Ritch went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored and catcher Brittany Patenaude was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one driven in. Kelly Kocher went the distance in the pitching circle for Nazareth, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits while striking out 11 and walking seven over six innings.

In the second game, Hedrick made her first pitching appearance of the season for AU and allowed an unearned run in the top of the seventh in a 3-1 Alfred win. She allowed four hits and struck out five as the Saxons scored single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings.

Arguello went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored and Hedrick went 1-for-4 with an RBI double. Sophomore centerfielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) had two hits in three at-bats and drove in a run and freshman rightfielder Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) had a hit and scored once.

Casey Mathers took the pitching loss for Naz, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits and striking out four. She was 1-for-3 and scored a run, while first baseman Nicole Bayona went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Alfred is in action next with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at home against Keuka on Tuesday, April 3.
