AU softball team takes pair from Keuka
The Saxons won the opener, 8-0 in six innings, then took the second game 7-3. With the sweep, AU improves to 13-7 on the season.
In the opener, AU scored single runs in the first and fourth innings before plating three in both the fifth and sixth frames in the abbreviated win. Sophomore centerfielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) (two RBIs, one run scored) and senior leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) (two runs scored, one batted in) each went 2-for-3 with RBI doubles to pace the Saxon offense.
Senior shortstop Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) and sophomore designated player Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) each had a hit and scored twice; freshman fist baseman Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) hit and double; and freshman Betsy Clark (Webster, NY/Bishop Kearney) hit an RBI single.
Freshman Jessica O’Sullivan (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable Regional) earned the pitching win for he Saxons, allowing four hits over 4 1/3 shutout innings, striking out seven and walking a pair. Freshman Samantha Jo Muller (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) tossed 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out one, to earn the save.
Centerfielder Elly Disbrow went 2-for-3 and shortstop Jessica Bandrowski hit a double for Keuka (3-3). Danielle Gravel took the complete-game loss for the Storm, allowing eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits while striking out two and walking three over 5 1/3 innings.
Delgado went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs and three RBIs as the Saxons completed the sweep. Netta was 2-for-4 with two runs and Hedrick had a pair of hits, including a double, in four at-bats and scored a run. Wickwire was 2-for-3 with a run driven in and sophomore third baseman Jessica Warner (Runnemede, NJ/Triton) hit an RBI double.
Hedrick improved to 2-0, allowing two earned runs on three hits in 4 1/3 innings. Muller earned her second save of the doubleheader, allowing an earned run on two hits in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Third baseman Brooke Lovell and rightfielder Brittany Smyder (two runs scored) each hit solo homeruns for Keuka, while catcher Katie Evangelista hit a run-scoring single. Kelly Proper took the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out two and walking three over three innings. Gravel pitched three innings in relief, allowing three earned runs on six hits and striking out a pair.
Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 7, for a key Empire 8 Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. at home against St. John Fisher.
