Lady Saxons knock off Thiel College, 17-14

GREENVILLE, PA-Junior attacker Ali Garcia (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial) (five goals, three assists) and freshman attacker Kaitlyn Button (Canastota, NY/Cazenovia) (six goals) combine for 14 points as the Alfred University women’s lacrosse team knocked off host Thiel College 17-14, Tuesday afternoon, in a non-conference matchup.

With the victory the Saxons improve to 4-3 overall (0-1 Empire), while the Tomcats fall to 3-6 on the season.

AU held a two-goal lead (9-7) heading into intermission, as AU outshot Thiel 22-15 and won 10 draw controls to the Tom Cats seven.

The Saxons started the second half strong scoring two goals in a 29 second span to claim an 11-7 advantage with 29:01 remaining in the contest. The Tomcats responded scoring four unanswered goals over a four-minute span to tie the game at 13-13 with 22:40 remaining. AU answered Thiels’ run notching four unanswered goals of their own to take a 17-13 lead with 4:50 remaining in the contest. Tomcat’s Emily Harrigan found the back of the net with 43 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.

For the game, AU had 37 shots to Thiels’ 29, and held a 38-28 advantage in groundballs.

Senior midfielder Molly Finnerty (Watertown, NY/Watertown), junior midfielder Tracie McGinnity (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) (one assist) and sophomore midfielder Ashley White (Islip, NY/Islip) each netted two goals and senior attacker Emily Crosby (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and junior midfielder Devin Fitzgerald (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) each dished out an assist to lead AU.

Taylor Tarajos (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) made eight saves in net for AU, while Asia Wallace stopped a game-high 16 shots in goal for Thiel.

Casmeir Mahdl recorded five points on four goals and an assist and Harrigan finished with three goals to pace the Tomcats.

Alfred returns to action Friday, April 6 at 4 p.m., as they take on hosts Hartwick College in Empire 8 Conference play.
