AU softball team sweeps Medaille

HORNELL, NY - The Alfred University softball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Medaille College Monday affernoon at Hornell High School, taking both ends of the twinbill by identical 13-5 scores in six innings.

With a strong wind blowing toward dead centerfield, balls were flying out of the park in the first game, with the teams combining for eight homeruns, five by the visitors. In the nightcap, each team hit one round-tripper.

Alfred (16-8) took a 4-0 lead after one inning of the first game before Medaille (2-20) responded with three in the top half of the second, courtesy of three solo homers. The Saxons tallied five in the bottom of the frame and single runs in he fourth and fifth to take an 11-5 lead before plating a pair in the sixth to go up by eight and end the contest.

Sophomore third baseman Jessica Warner (Runnemede, NJ/Triton) went 3-for-5 with a homerun and five RBIs to pace the Saxon offense. Sophomore centerfielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs and freshman leftfielder Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) went 3-for-4, stole two bases and scored twice. Sophomore rightfielder Rachel Guszick (Sparrowbush, NY/Port Jervis) and junior catcher Hana Gross (Union, NJ/Union) each hit homeruns for AU.

Kristen Rohe hit two homers for Medaille, while Katie Griffin, Tia Kinney and Mary Bongiovanni each hit one.

Freshman Ashley Sabourin (Brewerton, NY/Paul V. Moore) got the pitching win in relief of freshman starter Jessica O’Sullivan (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable Regional), allowing two runs on three hits and striking out three in 2 2/3 innings. Sophomore Tori Kramp (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) earned the save with 1 2/3 shutout innings of hitless relief. Rohe took the complete-game loss for Medaille, allowing 13 runs (10 earned) on 15 hits.

In the nightcap, Alfred took a 2-0 lead after one inning before Medaille scored four in the top of the second to take its only lead of the doubleheader. After a scoreless second, Alfred took the lead for good with three in the bottom of the third, then added five in the fourth to go up 10-4. Medaille scored a single run in the sixth, but AU responded with three in the bottom of the frame to close out the contest with an eight-run advantage.

Freshman Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Tonwanda) earned the pitching win for the Saxons, settling down after a rough third inning to five runs on eight hits while striking out four. She helped herself at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Junior second baseman Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood) went 2-for-4 with a homerun and three RBIs; Warner was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run; Delgado was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and two runs; Guszick was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI; sophomore Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) scored two runs and sophomore shortstop Melissa Montano (West Covina, CA/Walnut) had two hits and an RBI.

Katie Gibbins hit a three-run homerun and scored twice for Medaille and Mary Gangloff had two hits. Nicole Gulisano took the loss for the Mavericks, allowing 13 runs (nine earned) on 18 hits and striking out a pair.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, April 11, for a 5 p.m. doubleheader at home against Houghton College.
