Saxons take pair from Houghton

HORNELL, NY - Houghton College visited Alfred University for a non-conference doubleheader at Hornell High School Wednesday evening and the host Saxons swept the twinbill, taking the first game, 23-4, in five innings before shutting out the visitors, 7-0, in the nightcap.

In the opener, AU (18-8) got a homerun and two doubles from sophomore first baseman Jackie Tomisman (Schenectady, NY/Niskayuna) and sophomore centerfielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) went 4-for-5 with a double, homerun, four runs scored and seven RBIs. AU banged out 21 hits and batted around three times, tallying seven runs in the first inning and six in the third before exploding for 10 in the fourth.

Tomisman finished with five RBIs and scored twice and sophomore shortstop Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) had four hits in five at-bats, scored four runs and drove in a pair. Junior second baseman Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood) was 2-for-4 with a double, drove in three runs and scored three, and freshman pitcher Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Wickwire earned the complete-game win, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and striking out five.

Pitcher Sarah Bierne went 3-foro3 with a double, scored once and drove in a run to pace Houghton (0-24). She allowed 23 runs (18 earned) and struck out a pair.

Freshman pitcher Betsy Clark (Webster, NY/Bishop Kearney) earned the complete-game shutout victory in the second game, allowing four hits and striking out 11, the second-most in a single game in AU team history.

Arguello was 3-for-4 with a triple and scored once for the Saxons, while Delgado, Wickwire and Tomisman each hit run-scoring doubles. Senior leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) scored twice for Alfred and freshman catcher Lauren Fix (Hudson, NY/Germantown) went 2-for-3 and drove in a run.

Morgan Musser went 2-for-3 for Houghton. Morgan York took the pitching loss for the Highlanders, allowing seven runs (three earned) on 13 hits and striking out three.

Alfred is in action next on Thursday, April 12, when the Saxons host Cazenovia in a non-league doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at Hornell High School. The Saxons host a pair of weekend Empire 8 Conference doubleheaders: Saturday, April 14, at 3 p.m. against Stevens; and Sunday, April 15, at 5 p.m. against Elmira.
