4/12/12

HORNELL, NY - The Alfred University softball team swept a non-league doubleheader from visiting Cazenovia Thursday afternoon at Hornell High School. The Saxons took the first game, 8-0 in six innings, then won the nightcap, 14-0 in five innings, to improve to 20-8.

In the opener, freshman pitcher Jessica O’Sullivan (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable Regional) tossed a one-hit shutout. She allowed only two base-runners - on a second-inning walk and on Renee Johnson’s sixth-inning single - to improve to 7-3 on the season.

Sophomore second baseman Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) went 3-for-4 with a triple, scored once and drove a run for the Saxons, who had 14 hits.

Sophomore centefielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and one driven in; sophomore Rachel Guszick (Sparrowbush, NY/Port Jervis) had two hits, including a double, scored a run and drove in one; and junior third baseman Hana Gross (Union, NJ/Union) (one run) and sophomore shortstop Melissa Montano (West Covina, CA/Walnut) each went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Jenna Kraegar took the complete-game pitching loss for Cazenovia (2-16), allowing five earned runs and striking out three.

In the second game, Alfred batted around in the first inning, plating eight runs, then added six more over the next three innings to claim the abbreviated victory. The Saxons had 13 hits and benefited from five Cazenovia errors, which helped lead to four unearned runs.

AU freshman pitcher Betsy Clark (Webster, NY/Bishop Kearney) earned her second shutout in as many starts. She followed Wednesday nights win against Houghton with a five-hit blanking of Cazenovia, in which she allowed five hits and struck out seven.
Gross was 2-for-4 with a homerun, a double, a run scored and four RBIs and Delgado was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs to pace the Saxons’ offensive attack.

Freshman rightfielder Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) was 3-for-3 with two runs and a steal; Arguello was 2-for-3 and scored three times; freshman first baseman Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) hit a solo homer; freshman catcher Lauren Fix (Hudson, NY/Germantown) hit an RBI double and scored a run; and Montano hit a two-run double.

Courtney Hibbard took the pitching loss for Caz, allowing six runs (four earned) without getting an out in the first inning. Kraegar relieved and allowed eight runs (six earned) on nine hits in four innings. Kierstyn Decory had two hits for the Wildcats.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 14, for a 1 p.m. home doubleheader against Empire 8 foe Stevens Tech.
