AU softball teams takes two from RIT

ROCHESTER, NY - The Alfred University softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from host RIT Wednesday afternoon.

The Saxons beat their former Empire 8 Conference rival 11-4 in the opener, then took the nightcap, 13-1, in a game stopped after five innings. With the wins, AU improves to 22-8 on the year while RIT, which left the Empire 8 for the Liberty League season, falls to 9-19.

In the opener, senior leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) paced the Saxon offense, going 3-for-4 with a double, scoring a run and driving in four. Sophomore centerfielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) was 2-for-4 with a double, three runs and an RBI; sophomore infielder Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) was 2-for-3 with a run scored; freshman catcher Lauren Fix (Hudson, NY/Germantown) was 3-for-4; and junior third baseman Hana Gross (Union, NJ/Union) (double) and freshman first baseman Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) each had two RBIs.

Sophomore Tori Kramp (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) earned the pitching win in relief of freshman starter Jessica O’Sullivan (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable Regional). O’Sullivan allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits in 3 2/3 innings; Kramp tossed 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out two.

In the second game, Delgado was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs and Arguello was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one driven in for the Saxons. Senior pitcher Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two driven in; Netta and freshman outfielder Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) (two RBIs) each scored twice; and sophomore shortstop Melissa Montano (West Covina, CA/Walnut) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Hedrick allowed one earned run on three hits, striking out three, to get the win.

AU returns to conference play on Thursday, April 19, when the Saxons host Elmira in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Hornell High School. AU plays a pair of league twinbills this weekend: Saturday at Ithaca and Sunday at Utica. Both doubleheaders begin at 1 p.m.
