Lady Saxons fall in E8 action

Alfred, NY - The Alfred University women’s lacrosse team dropped an Empire 8 Conference matchup of to visiting Utica College 14-4, Saturday afternoon at Merrill Field.

The Pioneers outscored AU 11-3 in the first half and held a 23-5 advantage in shots at intermission. The Saxons had a stronger showing in the second half holding an 11-8 advantage in shots, while matching Utica’s three second half strikes. For the game, Utica had 31 shots to Alfred’s 16 and held a slight 18-16 advantage in groundballs.

Sophomore midfielder Ashley White (Islip, NY/Islip) had a team-high two points on one goal and one assist and junior midfielders Ali Garcia (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial), and Tracie McGinnity (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) and sophomore defender Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) each scored a goal. Freshman attacker Kaitlyn Button (Canastota, NY/Cazenovia) chipped in with an assist.

Freshman Taylor Tarajos (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) made a game-high eight saves in net for AU.

Samantha Gebler (three goals, two assists) and Katlyn Banker (game-high four goals, one assist) each registered a game-best four points to lead Utica (7-5, 2-3 Empire 8). Shelby Barbay started in goal for the Pioneers and stopped one shot in thirty minutes of work. Stephanie Belanger played the second half in goal for Utica and made four saves.

Alfred (4-8, 0-5 Empire 8) returns to action Sunday, April 22, at 1 p.m., when they take on visiting Ithaca College.
