St. John Fisher top Saxons, 15-9

ALFRED, NY - Visiting St. John Fisher College handed the Alfred University men’s lacrosse team a 15-9 setback Saturday afternoon in Empire 8 Conference action.

The teams played an evenly matched first quarter as both teams found the back of net twice, as AU held a 9-6 advantage in shots. The Cardinals scored three unanswered goals to start the second quarter, before sophomore midfielder Brendan Sullivan (Stafford, VA/North Stafford/The Kiski School (U.S. Navel Academy)) broke Alfred’s scoring drought to trim St. John Fisher’s lead to two goals (5-3). Neither team would score again before the half as the Cardinals took a 5-3 lead into intermission.

In the third quarter, AU was unable to gain any momentum notching only two goals, while allowing eight. The Saxons outscored the Cardinals 4-2 in the final frame to close out the scoring.

Sullivan finished with a team-high four points on three goals and one assist and senior midfielder Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) netted two goals and helped on another to pace the Saxons (4-10, 0-6 Empire 8). Sophomore attackman Ben DeMarco (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown (Mars Hill) scored two goals and freshman attackman Riley Kinnane (Little Compton, RI/Portsmouth Abbey) had a goal and an assist. Sophomore midfielder Derek Green (Pittsburgh, PA/The Kiski School) finished with a goal and senior attackman Stefan Dabkowski (Latham, NY/Shaker (SUNY Delhi)) chipped in with an assist.

Junior defender Jake Spadoni (Webster, NY/Webster Schroder) picked up four groundballs and caused a game-high turnovers to lead the defense. Freshman goalie Cody O’Connor (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) went the distance in goal for AU and made a game-high eight saves.

Connor Henderson scored a game-high seven goals and Mitch Ritchie netted five goals and dished out a pair of assists to lead the Cardinals (9-3, 4-1 Empire 8). Jamie Campagna earned the victory in net for St. John Fisher making five saves in the first half M.P. Joseph played the second half and made one save.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 28, at 1 p.m., against visiting Hartwick College, in the Saxons season finale.
