Stevens sweeps AU softball team
4/29/12

HORNELL, NY - The Alfred University softball team was swept by visiting Stevens Sunday afternoon in the final Empire 8 Conference games of the season for both teams. Stevens won the opener, 6-1, then took the nightcap of the doubleheader, 10-5.

With the pair of losses, Stevens vaults over AU to take the third seed in next weekend’s four-team Empire 8 Conference championship tournament and AU drops to the fourth seed. Both teams finished with 7-5 marks in conference play, but Stevens takes the tiebreaker by virtue of its two wins over Alfred.

Ithaca is the top seed and will host the double-elimination conference tournament. St. John Fisher is seeded second. The winner of the tournament, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 4 and 5, earns the Empire 8’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championships.

In Sunday’s opener, Stevens (16-21, 7-5 Empire 8) plated six runs in the fourth to get all the scoring Ducks’ starter Kayla Berardi would need. Five of the runs off AU freshman starter Jessica O’Sullivan (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable Regional) were unearned, coming with two outs after an AU error.

Senior leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) was 2-for-3 with a solo homerun for Alfred (26-12, 7-5 E8). Senior Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) and sophomore centerfielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) each had singles, as Berardi limited the Saxons to four hits while striking out 11 and walking two.

Jamie DeGenarro hit a two-run homerun for Stevens and Berardi was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored.

O’Sullivan allowed six hits and struck out four in 3 2/3 innings. Freshman Samantha Jo Muller (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) tossed 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits and striking out two.

In the second game took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first before Hedrick cut the advantage in half with a solo homerun leading off the home half of the first. Stevens answered with two more in the second before going up by nine with single runs in the fourth and fifth and four in the sixth. AU plated four in the sixth but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Netta was 2-for-3 with an RBI single and scored for AU, while freshman rightfielder Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Delgado scored a run and drove in on, while sophomore shortstop Melissa Montano (West Covina, CA/Walnut) and sophomore Danielle Mastropierro (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) each had a hit and scored a run.

Sophomore Tori Kramp (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) started for Alfred and took the loss. She pitched two innings and allowed four runs (two earned) before she was relieved by Muller, who went three innings and gave up two runs. Freshman Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Tonwanda) allowed four earned runs in a third of an inning in the sixth and Kramp re-entered and finished the game. Kramp, Muller and Wickwire combined to allow 11 hits and strike out two.

Stephanie Senkevich was 2-for-4 with a homerun and four RBIs for Stevens. Danielle DeFeo was 3-for-5 with two runs and Kendel Aurand had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run. Brianna Sandone earned the win for the Ducks, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits. Berardi pitched a scoreless and hitless ninth for the winners.

AU will play Ithaca in Friday’s first-round game of the double-elimination conference tournament, at a time to be announced. If the Saxons win, they would play the winner of the Fisher-Stevens first-round game. If the Saxons lose, they would play the loser of the other first-round game.
