Saxons place two on Empire 8 all-conference women’s lacrosse teams

ALFRED, NY -The Empire 8 announced its women’s lacrosse all-star teams Thursday and two Alfred University players earned all-conference recognition.

Freshman attacker Kaitlyn Button (Canestota, NY/Cazenovia) and junior midfielder Ali Garcia (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial) each eared honorable mention from the league. Statistics and play in Empire 8 games were considered in coaches’ voting for all-conference honors.

Button was the Saxons’ leading scorer in seven conference game, with 14 points on 12 goals and two assists. She also had 10 groundballs and caused three turnovers. Overall, she tied for the team lead with 44 points on a team-best 34 goals to go with 10 assists while picking up 30 groundballs and causing 10 turnovers.

Garcia tallied six points on six goals in league play and also had 14 groundballs and five caused turnovers. In all games, she tied for the team lead with 44 points on 32 goals and team-leading 12 assists while picking up a team-best 42 groundballs to go with eight caused turnovers.

Each season, the Empire 8 honors students-athletes from each conference school, who play on teams sponsored by the conference, with Sportsperson of the Year awards. Honorees, chosen by their coaches, exhibited outstanding sportsmanship in keeping with the conference’s mission of "competing with honor and integrity." Senior midfielder Molly Finnerty (Watertown, NY/Watertown) is Alfred’s honoree from the women’s lacrosse team.

The Saxons finished the 2012 season with a 4-10 overall record and an 0-7 mark in Empire 8 Conference play.
