St. John Fisher eliminates AU softball team from Empire 8 tournament
ITHACA, NY - St. John Fisher used two big innings to pull away from Alfred University late and claim an 11-1 win in an elimination game at the Empire 8 Conference championship softball tournament Saturday afternoon at Ithaca College.
Fisher plated a run in the top of the second before AU knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by senior leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) that scored freshman outfielder Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard).
Fisher went back ahead with four runs in the top of the fifth to make it 5-1, then pulled away with six more in the top of the seventh that closed out the game’s scoring. For the game, Fisher pounded out 14 hits while holding Alfred to four. Fisher, the double-elimination tournament’s second seed, advances to play top-seeded Ithaca in the championship game Sunday at 11 a.m. If Fisher wins, the two teams would play again for the tournament title and automatic bid to the NCAA championships.
Hampton finished with two hits in two at-bats for Alfred, which finishes the season with a 27-14 record. Sophomore shortstop Melissa Montano (West Covina, CA/Walnut) had a base hit. Senior Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) took the pitching loss for AU, allowing five earned runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. Three relievers combined to allow six runs (three earned) on three hits.
Fisher hurler Sarah Stefanon got the complete-game win, allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out 12. Kristen Robarge went 4-for-4 and Carissa Carlson went 2-for-4 to pace the Fisher bats. Kayla Goodberlet and Kelly Jones (triple) each drove in two runs.
