AU’s Scott competes at NCAAs; will take 10th in 400-meter dash

CLAREMONT, CA - Alfred University senior Rich Scott (Eden, NY/Eden) will take home 10th place in the 400-meter dash at the NCAA Division III championships, which conclude Saturday (May 26) in Claremont, CA.

Scott competed in preliminary heats of the 400 meters Friday evening. The top runners in each of three heats and the next six fastest runners qualify for Saturday’s event finals. Scott just missed advancing to the finals; his preliminary heat time of 48.67 seconds was just six one-hundredths of a second off the 48.61 seconds turned in by the ninth-place finals qualifier, Simpson College’s Ben Coy.

Scott’s time was 68/100ths of a second slower than his seed time of 47.99 seconds, turned in when he won last weekend’s ECAC championships. Only two runners in Friday’s NCAA preliminary heats ran faster than 47.99 seconds.

The NCAA appearance concludes an outstanding senior season for Scott. He won Empire 8 Conference and New York State titles in the 400-meter dash and 200-meter dash and was named Empire 8 Track Athlete of the Meet. His time of 47.99 seconds in winning the ECAC 400-meter title broke his own school record.
