Cushing pottery showcased in Rochester exhibit
Each summer, the Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, NY presents a showcase of regional art. This year, it’s the turn of the Rochester Biennial, an invitational featuring five individuals, including Val Cushing, AU class of 1952 and professor emeritus of ceramics.
Val is presenting massive storage jars in the Biennial. The pieces he made contain a daring mix of classical form and whimsical modern touches. For example, a teapot lid tops a venerable Grecian column. Or, a thick ring that looks like a bagel rests on an acorn-shaped vessel.
A highlight of the exhibit is an “In Their Own Words” Cell Phone Tour. While in the exhibition, visitors can use their cell phones to hear the artists talk about their work; free, but regular cell phone charges apply.
The Rochester Biennial runs through Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012. The Memorial Art Gallery is open Wednesday, Fridays-Sundays from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; Thursdays, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Admission is $12; $8 for senior citizens; $5 for college students and children ages 6-18.
The Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester is at 500 University Ave., Rochester NY. Call 585.276.8900 or go to mag.rochester.edu for more information.
