AU football chosen third in Empire 8 preseason coaches poll
ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University football team is picked to finish third in the Empire 8 Conference in 2012, according to the coaches’ preseason poll released Monday.
Salisbury (MD) University received seven of eight first-place votes and 49 points overall to lead the poll. St. John Fisher earned the other first-place vote to finish with 43 points, while Alfred claimed 37 points to rank third.
Ithaca was fourth with 28 points; Buffalo State, new to the league this season, was fifth with 22 points; Utica was sixth with 21 points; Frostburg (MD) State was seventh with 17; and Hartwick was eighth with seven points.
Alfred is coming off a 2011 season in which the Saxons finished 8-3 (4-3 Empire 8, good for third place in the conference). AU wrapped up its season with a win at Bridgewater (MA) State in the ECAC Northeast Bowl championship.
The Saxons open the 2012 season on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 12:30 p.m. at RPI. That game is followed by two road games: Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. at St. Lawrence and Sept. 22 at 12:30 p.m. at Buff State in the Saxons’ Empire 8 opener.
The Saxons have a bye Sept. 29 before hosting a pair of league games: Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. against Ithaca and Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. against St. John Fisher. AU travels to Salisbury for a noon game on Oct. 20 and to Utica the following weekend (Oct. 27, 2 p.m.). The Saxons play their home finale Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. against Frostburg before wrapping up the regular season on Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. at Hartwick.
