AU women’s soccer team opens season with tournament win
ALFRED, NY —The Alfred University women’s soccer team opened its 2012 season with a 3-1 win over SUNYIT Saturday afternoon in an opening-round game at the AU Invitational Tournament
Sophomore forward Rachael Williams (Penfield, NY/Penfield) scored two goals and freshman forward Mary Hendee (Almond, NY/Alfred-Almond) added a goal and an assist as the Saxons cruised to a 3-0 halftime lead. Alfred outshot the visiting Wildcats 7-4 in the first period and held an 11-9 shots advantage for the game.
Hendee opened the scoring on an unassisted goal 18:19 in, then assisted on Williams’ first goal 3:17 later. Williams added an unassisted goal at the 30:45 mark. Stephanie Wurz got SUNYIT on the board on an assist from Katie Driscoll 6:25 into the second half.
Senior Ashley Frazell (Newton, NJ/Newton) played the first half in goal for Alfred and made two saves. Junior Samijo Scheer (Corning, NY/Corning East) played the second half and stopped three shots. Aubrey Campbell went the distance in net for SUNYIT and made five saves.
In the tournament’s second first-round game Albany College of Pharmacy pulled past Sage college in a 3-2 victory.
Alfred takes on Albany College of Pharmacy in the championship game Sunday at 6 p.m. SUNYIT will play Sage College in the consolation game at 3 p.m.
