AU women’s tennis team splits season-opening weekend matches
ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University women’s tennis team opened its 2012 season by splitting a pair of weekend non-conference matches.
The Saxons (1-1) fell to visiting Brockport, 6-3, on Saturday, then bounced back Sunday to whip visiting Wells, 8-1.
In the Brockport match, AU took two of three doubles matchups. Freshman Emma Jackson (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) and sophomore Brennan Ferguson (Destrechan, LA/Ursuline) won their first doubles match, 8-3, and freshman Kaitlin Flaherty (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) and junior Samantha Thiele (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) win third doubles, 8-3. Alfred’s lone singles win came when Flaherty took her third singles match, 6-1, 6-0.
Against Wells, AU got singles wins from Jackson, 6-4, 6-2 in first singles; Flaherty, 6-2, 6-0 in third singles; senior Catherine Spencer (Homer, NY/Homer), 6-2, 6-1 in fourth singles; sophomore Emily Eisenbuerg (Oyster Bay, NY/Oyster Bay), 6-1, 6-0 in fifth singles; and junior Bethany Dickerson (Alma, NY/Wellsville), 6-0, 6-3 in sixth singles.
The Saxons swept doubles play. Jackson and Ferguson teamed to win first doubles, 8-4; Spencer and Eisenberg won second doubles, 8-6; and Flaherty and junior Alison Clemente (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) took third doubles, 8-0.
The Saxons are in action next on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 4 p.m. at Empire 8 Conference foe Ithaca.
