AU women’s soccer team wins AU Invitational Tournament
ALFRED, NY —The Alfred University women’s soccer team topped Albany College of Pharmacy in Sunday evening’s championship of the AU Invitational Tournament.
Both teams played an even first half splitting five shots apiece as they headed into intermission, tied at 0-0. The two teams continued to trade shots back and forth for the remainder of regular time, but neither team could find the net as time expired.
Not until the final four minutes of the second overtime period was sophomore midfielder Rachael Williams (Penfield, NY/Penfield) able to net the golden goal and win the match for the Saxons. For the game, AU (2-0-0) held an advantage in shots (17-10) and corner kicks (7-4) over Albany College of Pharmacy (1-1-0).
Junior goalie Samijo Scheer (Corning, NY/East) got her first start of the season for the Saxons as she went the full length of the game, making seven saves, which led to a shutout. Alexandra Weston also went the distance for Albany, earning seven saves as well.
Earlier in the day, SUNYIT defeated Sage, 5-2, in the tournament consolation. The All-Tournament Team was announced after each game Sunday. All-Tournament selections were: Rachael Williams and Samijo Scheer from Alfred; Alexandra Weston and Alexa Schooley from Albany College of Pharmacy; Katie Driscoll and Stephanie Wurz from SUNYIT; and Nicole Maher and Rachel Wampler from Sage.
Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 6 p.m. at Pitt-Bradford.
