AU volleyball team opens season with five-set win at Cazenovia
9/04/12

ALFRED, NY — When outlining her team’s goals for the 2012 season, first-year Alfred University volleyball coach Elaina Braun pointed to a need to win five-set matches. The Saxons are off to a good start on that count, as they opened the season with a 3-2 comeback victory at Cazenovia Saturday.

Junior Samantha Wood (Newfield, NY/Newfield) had 12 kills, eight digs and a pair of blocks; and junior Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had 14 kills, 19 digs and five service aces; and junior Paige Jensen (Weiser, ID/Weiser) added 12 kills and 13 digs) as the Saxons rallied from a two sets to one deficit to win 21-25, 25-23, 25-27, 25-19 and 15-13.

Junior setters Tara Barone (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) and Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) had 22 and 20 assists, respectively, and senior Jennifer Miranda (Bronx, NY/Academy of Letters) chipped in with 34 digs.

AU is in action next on Saturday, Sept. 8, for a tri-match hosted by Hilbert College. The Saxons play Hilbert at 10 a.m. then face Utica at noon.
