Saxon volleyball team drops pair in opening day at New Paltz Tournament
NEW PALTZ, NY -- The Alfred University volleyball team lost a pair of matches Friday on the opening day of the New Paltz Invitational Tournament. The Saxons fell to Ithaca, 3-0, then lost 3-1 to SUNY Old Westbury.
Against Ithaca, Alfred (1-5) lost by scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-17. Junior Paige Jensen (Weiser, ID/Weiser) led Alfred with 11 kills, 11 digs, two blocks and two service aces. Junior Samantha Wood (Newfield, NY/Newfield) had four kills and three blocks; junior Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) added five kills and seven digs; and juniors Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) and Tara Barone (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) had 11 and eight assists, respectively.
In the Old Westbury match, the game scores were25-15, 25-17, 15-25, and 25-20. Hall had 15 kills and 14 digs; Jensen had nine kills, nine digs, four service aces and two blocks; Wood had 10 kills and three blocks; Gallipeau had 20 assists and five digs; Barone had 17 assists; and junior Kelsey Brand (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) had six kills and six digs.
The tournament concludes Saturday, when the Saxons play two matches: at noon against Oswego and at 4 p.m. against Mt. St. Mary.
