Saxons drop pair at E8 tournament

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University volleyball team lost a pair of 3-0 decisions Saturday during the second day of action at the Empire 8 Conference Crossover Tournament Friday evening at the McLane Center.


Six teams played in the tournament, part of round-robin play among the nine E8 teams. The teams with the best four records in Empire 8 play will earn bids to the conference championship tournament, the winner of which earns a berth in the NCAA tournament. On Saturday, AU lost to Nazareth (25-8, 25-22, 27-25) and Utica (25-13, 25-23, 25-22) to fall to 0-3 in Empire 8 play (1-12 overall).


In the match against Nazareth, junior Paige Jensen (Weiser, ID/Weiser) led AU with seven kills and 12 digs. Junior Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had nine kills and six digs; junior Samantha Wood (Newfield, NY/Newfield) had four kills and two blocks and junior Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) had 15 assists.


Against Utica, Wood had five kills and four blocks; junior Kelsey Brand (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) had five kills and three blocks; Hall had seven kills and 10 digs; and junior Tara Barone (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) had 13 assists.


Alfred is in action next on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28 and 29, at the SUNY Brockport Tournament.
