Music Department ensemble concert to benefit local church organ
10/09/12

The Music Department in the Performing Arts Division, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at Alfred University will present Organ Spectacular III on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Alfred Seventh Day Baptist Church, 5 Church St.

The event is free to the public; free-will donations will be accepted to benefit the church’s organ fund.

The ensemble concert will feature organ, brass, and vocal performances. University Carillonneur Laurel Buckwalter, who organized the program, will perform one of the greatest organ compositions of all time, “J.S. Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in F Major.”

Christopher Foster, assistant professor of music and director of bands, will present the “Gabriel's Oboe” from the film “The Mission.” Violinists Dr. Lisa Lantz, associate professor music/strings, and new community member Eugenia Meltzer will play Vivaldi's “Concerto Grosso in D minor for Two Violins.” AU student Michaela Stone will perform the “Serenade for Flute” by Philip Glass.

The Alfred Volunteer Choir Company (made up of AU faculty and staff and community members) and the AU Chamber Singers, directed by Dr. Luanne Crosby, professor of voice/chorus, will perform three Russian pieces from Tolstoy’s drama “Czar Feodor Ioannovich” by 20th century Russian composer Georgy Sviridov.

The program will close with the “Salvum fac populum tuum” by French composer Charles Widor, performed by trumpeters Foster; Todd Bialecki, art and music teacher at Alfred-Almond Central School; AU student Sean Locker; and trombonists Mark Fugate, associate professor of psychology; AU student Peter Metz; and Buckwalter on organ.

Organ Spectacular III benefits the Alfred Seventh Day Baptist Organ Fund, an ongoing campaign for the continued restoration and maintenance of the 23-rank, 1930 Moller organ housed in the church. The church completed a successful three-year Organ Restoration Campaign in 2010 to make the most critical repairs to the instrument, but continued maintenance is needed to keep the organ in working condition.

Those who cannot attend the concert but want to make a donation may mail a check made out to the Seventh Day Baptist Church Organ Fund to Seventh Day Baptist Church, 5 Church St., Alfred, NY 14802.
