Alfred’s Flaherty wins first-round match at state women’s tennis tournament
ITHACA, NY — The Alfred University women’s tennis team is competing at the New York State championship tournament, Friday-Sunday, Oct. 12-14, in Ithaca. On Friday’s first day of action, AU freshman Kaitlin Flaherty (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) won her third singles match against Brockport’s Katelyn Richenburg, 8-3.
Flaherty takes on top-seeded Alex Smith of Skidmore in a second-round match today. Three other Saxons fell in their singles matches Friday: freshman Emma Jackson (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville), 8-0 in first singles to Elizabeth McGrail of RIT; sophomore Brennan Ferguson (Destrechan, LA/Ursuline), 8-0 in second singles to Winnie Yates of Vassar; and senior Melissa Boyer (Bloomfield, MI/Lahser), 8-6 in fourth singles to Brooke Kaylor of RIT.
AU will play two other singles matches today. Senior Cady Spencer (Homer, NY/Homer) takes on Aislin Shea of Hamilton in fifth singles and sophomore Emily Eisenberg (Oyster Bay, NY/Oyster Bay) plays St. Lawrence’s Samantha Miller in sixth singles.
Flaherty and Boyer won their first-round third doubles match, 8-3, against Sarah Stromski and Nicole Derose of Brockport on Friday. The pair then fell, 8-0, to the top-seeded team from Skidmore. Also on Friday, Jackson and Ferguson lost their first-round first doubles match, 8-0 to Christine Nunez and Allison Young of Ithaca, and Spencer and Eisenberg lost 8-0 to Hallsey Leighton and Remy Raevsky of William Smith.
