AU men’s soccer throttles Buff State, 8-0
ALFRED, NY- The Alfred University men’s soccer team crushed visiting Buffalo State in an 8-0 decision, Tuesday evening on Merrill Field.
For AU (4-11-0, 0-5-0 Empire 8), junior goalie Jacob Bird (Auburn, NY/Skaneateles) made four saves in the first 45 minutes of the contest, while freshman keeper Matthew Unick (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) finished off the second half to help lead the Saxons in a combined shutout victory.
The Saxons were able to score a frenzy of goals, holding a distinct 24 to 11 shot advantage over Buff State, along with a four to two corner kick advantage. Senior forward Frankie Mannino (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) earned a hat trick with goals at the 5th minute, the 19th minute, and the 57th minute. Senior forward Eric Rockwood (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) would net two goals in the span of five minutes (76th, 81st minute), while junior forward Jeffery Thomas (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) (1 assist) and freshman forward Nicholas Carey (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) scored a goal apiece.
Senior midfielder Tony Gai (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock), freshman midfielder Greg Buisman (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), and freshman midfielder Dylan Smith (Silver Springs, MD/Sandy Spring Friends), all had assists as well.
Alfred next travels to Utica to resume Empire 8 play on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m.
