Alfred swimming and diving teams split with Nazareth to open season
ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened their 2012-13 seasons Saturday at home against Nazareth. The AU men won the dual meet 169-115, while the Alfred women lost, 174-120.
Senior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell) won three events to pace the AU men and freshman Carly Watson (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) won three for the AU women.
Chapman won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:26.16), the 200-yard free (1:48.97) and the 500-yard free (5:01.58). Other individual winner for the Alfred men were: junior Pete Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron), in the 50-yard free (22.64 seconds) and 100-yard free (50.08 seconds); and sophomore Zach Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.53) and 200-yard individual medley (2:04.13). Sowinski was also second in the 200 free (1:52.73) and Toth was second in the 200 back (2:03.80).
Other top performers for the AU men were: sophomore David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port), second in the 50 free (22.85); freshman Jake Olson (Dansville, NY/Dansville), second in the 100 breast (1:07.17); senior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), second in the 200 fly (2:13.52) and 100 fly (56.38); sophomore David Coombs (Dansville, NY/Dansville), second in the 100 back (57.72), 100 free (50.51); and sophomore Joseph Rogers (Dublin, NH), second in the 500 free (5:16.29).
AU swept the men’s relays. Coombes, Toth, Irwin and Luke won the 200 medley relay (1:42.50); and Luke, freshman Sheldon Vosburgh (Canajoharie, NY/Canajoharie), Chapman and Sowinski won the 200 free relay (1:31.32).
Watson won the 200 free (2:01.30), the 200 butterfly (2:20.66) and the 100 fly (1:01.50) for the Alfred women. Also earning individual wins for the Saxon women were: freshman Kelsey McRill (Solon, OH/Solon), in the 50-yard freestyle (25.36); and junior Cassie Brown (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood) in 1-meter diving (207.80) and 3-meter diving (233.75). McRill was also second in the 100 breast (1:12.70) and third in the 100 free (58.03).
Other top performers for the AU women were: junior Paige Citarella (West Islip, NY/West Islip), second in the 200 back (2:29.71); sophomore Christina Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional), second in the 100 free (57.30), third in the 50 free (25.90); freshman Melissa Diegel (Sherwood, OR/Sherwood), third in 1-meter diving (164.95); sophomore Allison Derwallis (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlow), third in the 100 back (1:09.50) and 200 back (2:29.77); and senior Shelby Remington (Gainesville, NY/Letchworth), third in the 1,000-yard free (11:58.41).
The AU women’s team of Watson, freshman Emma Gromelski (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights), McRill and Behr won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:44.37.
The AU men and women re in action next on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. at RIT.
